Machine Learning Engineers and Scientists (OpenEuroLLM)

Building Open Source LLMs for Europe

We are pioneering the development of a family of state-of-the-art open large language models designed specifically for European languages. Our mission is to create accessible, powerful AI technology that respects European values, regulations, and multilingual needs.

The Role

We're seeking exceptional Machine Learning Engineers and Scientists to join our team and help shape the future of open-source AI in Europe. You'll work at the cutting edge of language model development, collaborating with talented peers across Europe to build, optimize, and deploy models that serve diverse European communities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and implement efficient pipelines for pre-training large language models at scale

  • Develop instruction-tuning methodologies to enhance model chat capabilities

  • Create comprehensive evaluation frameworks to benchmark model performance across multiple dimensions, such as multi-linguality, reasoning or common sense question / answering.

  • Lead code reviews and provide technical mentorship to junior team members

  • Represent our research by publishing at top-tier AI conferences, contribute to open-source projects, and engage with the wider AI community

Requirements

  • A finalized or close to completion MSc degree, in computer science, mathematics, physics, or another discipline with a strong computational component.

  • Track record in machine learning development demonstrated through contributions to notable open-source projects or significant industry experience

  • Strong programming skills in Python with an emphasis on clean, maintainable code

  • Proficiency in deep learning and at least one deep-learning framework (PyTorch, TensorFlow, or JAX)

  • Experience with bash scripts, git, MLops platforms (e.g Weights and Biases)

  • Excellent problem-solving abilities and attention to detail

Preferred Qualifications

Having those qualifications are not required but will be a bonus:

  • Specialized knowledge of LLM training techniques, evaluation methodologies, and post-training optimization

  • Familiarity with the broader LLM ecosystem (HuggingFace, VLLM, Langchain, etc.)

  • Experience with large-scale computing environments (cloud platforms, SLURM clusters)

  • Background in multilingual NLP and language understanding

  • Publication history in relevant NLP/ML conferences or journals

What We Offer

  • The opportunity to work on impactful, open-source technology that will advance European AI capabilities

  • Collaboration with leading experts in the field

  • A flexible and supportive work environment that encourages innovation

  • Professional development opportunities and support for research initiatives

Salary

The contract will have a length of 2.5 years and a trial period of 6 months.

ELLIS Institute

You would be working at the ELLIS Institute, a world-renowned center for pioneering basic research in the field of artificial intelligence (founded in 2023, with 26 NeurIPS papers in 2024). The Institute aims to attract the world's best machine learning talent, providing them with outstanding conditions to conduct research in a state-of-the-art facility located in Tübingen, Germany. The vision is part of a broader initiative, the European Laboratory for Learning and Intelligent Systems (ELLIS), which aims to build a pan-European institution for machine learning research.

In this project, you would be working with Aaron Klein, Antonio Orvieto, Bernhard Schölkopf, David Salinas, Frank Hutter, Jonas Geipning, Wieland Brendel and in particular with Aaron Klein and David Salinas who lead the project.

How to apply
